George Vet Checkup for His Conjuctival Graft aka Left Eye Surgery

Hi friends!
A most tired mama Mindy here to report to you about George's vet visit this morning.

The intern, Daniel, came in and did an ophthalmic (i.e. eye) exam and did a tear measurement for George's right eye.  Dr. Stuckey performed a fluorescent eye stain to both eyes to check for superficial scratches and to check the cornea.

Results:
The ophthalmic exam showed that George's surgery is healing nicely.  Is is a good rich red, pink color...showing that blood vessels are sending nourishment to the cornea for rebuilding what was lost due to the ulcer.  George's right eye does produce enough tears.  The fluorescent eye stain was good in the fact that George does not show any superficial scratches or any additional damage to his corneas.

What happens now?
George's oral medications remain unchanged: he gets two Clavamoxx (oral antibiotic) daily and his Deramaxx for pain and inflammation (which he also uses for his arthritis...no additional dose...just is being used as a therapy for his eye condition, too).  His Tobramycin and Artificial Tears with Cefazolin have been reduced for the next week from 8-10 drops daily of each medical eye drop, to only 6-8 drops daily of each medical eye drop.  George's GenTeal had an expiration date of this month, so we were given (free of charge) Systane eye gel (equivalent to previous GenTeal).  On the GenTeal, we had to treat 4 times a day.  Now, with the Systane eye gel and a week of healing, George only needs to have it given 2-3 times a day...one bottle for each eye...one drop for each eye at each scheduled dosage time.

Next visit?
One week from today.  Wednesday, March 5th at 9am.  (Pray for good weather coming and going as this morning's travel was fair with only a light dusting of snow and treated roads...while this weekend looks to get real "ucky/mucky/yucky"...)  On the next visit, George's left eye will get measured for tear production and both eyes will be checked for quality of tears produced.  The veterinarians want to determine if George needs further treatment for his eyes...specifically to see if he has a diagnosis of dry eye.

How happy are me and mom (George's nurses)?  Extremely happy and tired.  It is a two hour drive up to Manhattan and a two hour drive back after and one-and-a-half hour consultation...(remember this is a University/Specialty hospital that teaches new vets...everything is documented and that takes a little extra time...)

Blessings to you all and continue to pray for George as he is not "out of the woods" yet and his eye condition will be monitored over the next several weeks.  The main concern now is still about his conjunctival graft and it turning a "bad" color (grey, white, or purple) or leaking out "icky" fluid (green, white) or excessive squinting or changes in his current vision or (worst of all to me) a dehisce...or the graft becoming loose/detached from the cornea it is meant to help heal.

George is sleeping peacefully now...and I hate to give him drops when asleep...but you better believe that I hop into action with the drops as soon as he awakens.  Pray for me and my mom to be able to be good nurse maids to George and to have energy for work and school.

God Bless y'all,

Mama Mindy
